Pharmacy oral exam tutoring: 1-on-1 Part C practice

What is the tutoring workshop?

Knowing the clinical content is only part of preparing for pharmacy oral exam Part C. You also need to work through a scenario, make a decision and explain it clearly while another person is listening.

Our 1-on-1 pharmacy oral exam tutoring workshop is built around that skill. Across two hours, you sit three practice exams and receive detailed feedback on your reasoning, answer structure and communication.

Why practise live?

A common difficulty in oral exam preparation is that candidates do not know how their answer sounds to someone else. You may identify the right clinical problem but take too long to reach it, fail to clearly state your recommendation, miss important counselling or sound uncertain despite having the underlying knowledge.

That is difficult to identify from silent study. A live mock makes the gaps much more obvious.

What happens during the session?

The session is conducted 1-on-1 online. You complete three practice exams using realistic pharmacy scenarios designed to make you reason and communicate rather than simply recall facts.

The focus is particularly on Part C: Problem Solving and Communication. The current Pharmacy Board practice framework allocates 20 minutes to Part C and describes a prescription-based role play where candidates gather relevant information, identify medication-related problems, make decisions and communicate with the patient or prescriber.

Our workshop is independent preparation and does not claim to reproduce an official Ahpra examination exactly.

What feedback do you receive?

After each mock, we work through what happened. The feedback considers:

• clinical reasoning and identification of the key issue
• prioritisation and immediate safety decision
• whether your recommendation is specific and justified
• communication with the patient and/or prescriber
• patient counselling and red flags
• answer structure and unnecessary detail
• areas to focus on in your remaining preparation

The aim is to leave you with specific changes to make, rather than simply being told to study more.

A structured approach to Part C

Our independent practice resources use a repeatable five-step response framework:

1. Immediate safety decision — dispense, hold, refer or contact the prescriber.
2. Key issues — identify and prioritise the clinically important problems.
3. Action plan — state what you would do and what you would recommend.
4. Patient counselling — explain administration, risks, red flags and follow-up where relevant.
5. Documentation and follow-up — close the loop.

This is an independent study framework, not an official Ahpra marking rubric.
